We are the 3rd Largest Ancillary Services Provider in the Czech Republic. The Largest Aggregator.
In the 2026 long-term ancillary services auctions in the Czech Republic, Nano Energies secured 12% of the total contracted volume, making Nano Energies the 3rd largest ancillary services provider in the Czech Republic and the Czech aggregator with the largest contracted volume, while our portfolio achieved prices above the market average.
Today, we provide more than 280 MW of flexibility to support the Czech transmission system, delivered through battery energy storage systems (BESS), cogeneration units, and other flexible assets connected to our portfolio.
The 2026 auctions were also the first to be organized as two separate half-year auctions instead of the traditional annual procurement cycle, providing valuable insight into how the Czech balancing market continues to evolve.
What Are Long-Term Ancillary Services Auctions?
Ancillary services (also known as balancing services) help maintain the stability of the electricity system. They are procured by ČEPS, the Czech transmission system operator (TSO), from providers that can quickly increase or decrease electricity generation or adjust their consumption when needed, often through an aggregator.
Long-term auctions represent only part of this market. Through these auctions, ČEPS secures approximately 30% of the ancillary services required to operate the Czech power system, while the remaining volume is procured through daily auctions based on current system needs.
As a result, long-term auction outcomes provide insight into the capacity that the TSO chooses to secure in advance, while daily auctions remain the primary mechanism for procuring flexibility closer to real time.
Key takeaways from the 2026 auction results
- The role of long-term auctions is changing. Long-term auctions now account for only around 30% of the total balancing services volume, while most capacity is traded through daily auctions. The Czech market is gradually moving closer to the model common across much of Europe, where short-term markets play the dominant role.
- This trend is also reflected in an interesting result for the second half of 2026. The Czech transmission system operator did not procure any downward balancing service in the long-term auction. This could create more attractive pricing opportunities in the daily market for downward balancing services.
- The decline in ancillary services prices continues. The long-term downward trend in prices was confirmed by comparing the two half-year auctions for 2026. Prices for some products fell to approximately half of the levels seen in the auction for the first half of the year. As a result, the economics of flexibility will increasingly depend on a multi-market approach.
- The importance of decentralized resources continues to grow. Battery storage systems, cogeneration units, and other modern technologies are becoming an increasingly important part of balancing services and complementing traditional generation assets.Detailed auction results are available on the Czech TSO's website.
