Electrification

Electrification is the process of replacing the use of fossil fuels with electricity as a source of energy in various applications. This can involve switching from fossil fuel-based heating systems to electric heating, or replacing gasoline-powered cars with electric vehicles. Electrification is often promoted as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, as electricity can be generated from a variety of low-carbon or renewable sources.

Electrification may be able to lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the households, industrial, and transportation sectors, which account for around 60 percent of world greenhouse gas emissions. This depends on the resources needed to produce power. To decarbonize the economy and eventually, lessen the effects of climate change, it is essential to address emissions from these sectors.

What are electrification of uses?

The way we refuel our cars, heat our homes, power our appliances, and run our businesses must alter in response to climate change and energy security concerns. By "electrification of uses," we refer to the use of electricity to replace fossil fuels, which emit the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and are often sourced from problematic regimes. In particular, electrification will make a major difference in transportation, housing, public, and industrial areas. As a result of technological advancement, using electricity is frequently more affordable than using fossil fuels. In addition, since waste is reduced due to improved efficiency, less energy is needed to achieve the same level of performance. The best way to decarbonize the economy, improve transportation, ensure cleaner air, and digitally transform our homes and towns is to electrify final energy consumption.

Electrification of homes

Home electrification is important for several reasons. Probably most important is reduced costs for heating, cooking and transportation. In addition, local pollution especially from homes still burning coal for heating is reduced.

What are some sources of home electrification?

  • a heat pump that can reduce heating costs by up to 45% on average and is up to three times more efficient than a boiler
  • electric vehicles have a higher upfront cost, but over time reduce the cost of transportation, and can be managed flexibly
  • Induction cooktops are up to twice as efficient as conventional gas burners while also improving safety, temperature control, and cooking consistency

Electrification of industry

Industrial electrification is a massive opportunity to reduce carbon emissions. Across European industries, many ways exist to replace fossil fuel-powered processes with electric alternatives. One of the most promising aspects of electrification is that electrified processes can be managed via demand response to reduce the costs of operations. In addition, electrification can help reduce energy costs for industries by allowing them to take advantage of lower-cost electricity from renewable sources.

What are some benefits of industrial electrification?

  • First off, electricity is easier to handle and can lead to higher-quality products because it is more accurate, adaptable, and controllable than combustion.
  • Another significant benefit is a decrease in costs due to increased energy efficiency and decreased maintenance requirements.
  • Electrification helps achieve sustainability goals because there are no on-site direct pollution emissions.

Where do we go from here?

Electrification can improve our energy system by increasing optimization and is necessary for decarbonization.  As more and more technologies are powered by electricity instead of fossil fuels, the demand for electricity can become more predictable and easier to manage. For example, if a significant portion of a community's heating and transportation needs are met with electric heat pumps and electric vehicles, the demand for electricity will be more consistent and easier to forecast.

This, in turn, will make the entire energy system more efficient by allowing energy consumers to reduce their electricity usage during peak demand.  Electrification has many benefits that can accelerate the transition to a more sustainable electricity system.
